What is next best action in sales?
Next best action in sales is the practice of deciding which single action a salesperson should take next, such as a reply, a call, a LinkedIn message or a follow-up, instead of leaving them to choose from a long list. A good one weighs evidence, owed work and the minutes available, and explains its choice.
Why it exists.
A salesperson always has more possible work than time. The list of things they could do grows faster than the hours in the day, and the items are worth very different amounts. Next best action is the response: stop presenting the list, and decide.
How it differs from lead scoring.
Lead scoring ranks records, such as leads or accounts, by how promising they look. Next best action ranks actions: what to do next, on which channel, for whom. A promising lead you contacted yesterday should not outrank a reply you owe today, and a score alone cannot say that.
How do you prioritize leads and sales tasks?
Most teams prioritize by score or by cadence. A next best action approach asks three plain questions instead. What do I owe someone: a reply, a follow-up, a commitment? Where is the strongest and most recent evidence that a conversation is worth having? And what fits the minutes I actually have today? Answer those in that order and the list shrinks to one clear move.
How it differs from a sequence.
A sequence is a schedule of steps. Next best action asks whether the next scheduled step is actually the best use of the next minute, given what has happened since it was set up.
What a good one does.
It funds what you owe first, such as replies and follow-ups. It paces new outreach. It fits the day into the time you have. It shows why one action beat the others, and it says so plainly when nothing deserves your attention.
